One of the best-known artichoke farms in Castroville is Pezzini Farms. It was founded in the 1930s and is still run by the Pezzini family, with Tony and his dad, Guido, at the helm. We’ve partnered with Pezzini Farms for years to bring in fresh-picked Green Globe artichokes that are picked, packed and delivered to our stores in less than 24 hours. Ranch Name: Pleasant Oaks Ranch
Farmer(s) Name
: Ron Matik
Location
: Springville, CA
Crops sold at Sigona’s:
Pesticide-free Navel oranges
About:
Springville is a farming community which lies just beyond the outskirts of our 150 mile “what’s local” radius, but we’ve worked with this farm for years for the most delicious, pesticide-free Navels oranges around. New owner Ron Matik continues to grow them with absolutely no pesticides, just as former owner John Brinkman (now in his 90s) did for years and years. Pleasant Oaks Ranch oranges aren’t certified organic, they’re good enough to be. Ron uses no chemical sprays in his orchard and protects his precious trees from insect pests by bringing in beneficial predators like aphytis wasps and lacewings.

We’ve worked with Phil and his wife Katherine for about 15 years to bring in different organic items, including Swiss chard, tomatoes and heirloom melons from their certified organic ranch. The Fosters have incorporated eco-friendly and sustainable practices at their two certified organic ranches. They use crop rotation and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to naturally control various pests. They also create their own compost, installed reusable drip irrigation on every acre of the ranch and transitioned all ranch vehicles to run on biodiesel.
