Satsuma
Mandarins

  • Choose Satsumas that have a fresh stem to them. Older ones will have a dry brittle and discolored stem.
  • They should look fresh, bright and shiny, although bright color is not necessarily an indication of quality as some fruits naturally have green patches even when fully ripe.
  • The skin should...

mandarins.jpgSatsuma's Great 'Ap-peel'

by Robbie Sigona

They are my sons' favorite, my favorite, Uncle Carmelo's favorite...they're everyone's favorite! I'm talking about Satsuma mandarins, those little and undoubtedly quick, satisfyingly sweet snacks. Small, sweet, seedless, easy to peel and bursting with juice, Satsuma mandarins are proof that good things come in small packages.

Satsumas are a favorite for customers too, so next week (Jan. 18-24, 2012) we're giving you a free 3 lb. bag of fresh-picked, local Satsumas with your coupon and a purchase of $30 or more. Satsumas for the whole family!

We have two Satsuma suppliers this year: Blue Jay Satsumas from Johnston Farms in Edison, Calif. (just east of Bakersfield) and Family Tree Farms, a grower, packager and shipper of Satsumas grown surrounding areas; they're based just east of Fresno. We've had Blue Jay Satsumas in since November and can hardly keep them on the shelves - they're a bright, juicy fruit everyone looks forward to during the chilly months.

More Wattle & Comb Pastured Eggs Coming Soon

Wattle & Comb just bought in 200 more chicks that are ready to start laying petite-sized eggs called PeeWees. This means more eggs - in various sizes - are coming soon!

eggs.jpgAttention Wattle & Comb pastured egg lovers: thank you for your patience as the hens lay fewer eggs during molting season - darker days makes for fewer eggs. We know you've been pining for more of these delicious eggs, and thank you for your understanding!

We have some good news, though! Wattle & Comb has added 200 new hens to their flock that grazes just over the hill in Pescadero. These new hens, known as pullets, lay petite-sized eggs, known as PeeWees. These eggs will increase in size as the hens mature.

Wattle & Comb announced this week that some of the pullet hens are just starting to lay so we'll have these adorable, petite-sized PeeWees in just a couple weeks. While pullet eggs are the new rage in the culinary world, they have a certain cuteness factor that appeals to kiddos just the same. They're sized just right for children, and their bright colors (both inside and out) make them fun to enjoy.

Of course, their appeal to children makes them easy for adults to love them even more. Pastured PeeWee eggs contain more vitamins and...MORE

Fogdog 2009 Chardonnay
by Freestone Vineyards, Freestone, CA
$24.99/bottle
Reg. $26.99

The 2009 Fogdog Chardonnay features aromas of apple, pear, almonds, citrus and stone fruits. It's full-bodied, yet elegant and restrained, with a core of acidity and minerality that is balanced by warm flavors of pear tart and almond crisp along with notes of lemon and tangerine zest. Dessert in a bottle, anyone?

The wine rounds out with oak influences of toasted nuts and vanilla, while maintaining a balanced fruitiness.

"Orange 'Ya Gonna' Ask About Oranges?"
By Dr. Douglas Husbands

holistichealth.jpg

...Well technically speaking, Satsuma Mandarins are not an orange. But they have many characteristics of an orange.

Satsuma Mandarins are also known as Honey Citrus. This is because of their high level of sweetness. The scientific name for the fruit is Citrus unshiu.

An average sized Satsuma Mandarin contains 2 grams of fiber. They contain between 110 and up to 200 mg potassium, which is about twice as much as the average banana. The vitamin C content is between about 31 mg, and up to 70 mg. They contain some interesting phytochemicals. According to an article in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (J. Agric. Food Chem., 2008;56: 8874-8878) Satsuma Mandarin juice can contain between...MORE
